Picking a destination for the summer holidays may be a daunting task, but I have no doubt I will go to Sardinia again this summer. I have visited many times, and each time I fall in love with it a little bit more. This Italian island is the second biggest in the Mediterranean. Although it belongs to Italy, the feeling one gets here is that it is a world apart and completely unique.
Every time I visit Sardinia I make it a point to go to my favorite places in the region, such as the long, white sandy beach of Costa Rei – about 1 hour drive from Sardinia’s capital, Cagliari. But I also try to visit as many new places as possible.
My plan for this time around is to go to Oasi Biderosa, a protected marine area which allows access to only a very small number of visitors every day (and for which I will have to make reservations in advance). I also intend to visit the Maddalena archipelago, famous for its gorgeous beaches and incredibly clear waters.
But I also won’t miss out on some of Sardinia’s most hidden treasures, such as the archeological site of Sa Sedda e Sos Carros, not far from Lanaitto Valley, and if it is not too hot I plan to hike the Supramonte area.
I will finally head to the west coast to visit the feline colony of Su Pallosu. Here, cats live right on a gorgeous beach and a group of volunteers created a charity to protect them and provide for them. Such a great job they are doing that they have made the national and international news several times, and a cat lover like me can’t go to Sardinia and skip such a place.
As I plan to move around a lot, I think the best thing to do is to take a ferry to Sardinia so that I can also take my own car and once back I can stock on some of the local specialties without having to worry too much about having to check in too much luggage at the airport.
