Krabi: Hotels and Villas for Families at Ao Nang Beach

Ao Nang Beach in Krabi is enjoying an incredible tourist boom and acts a kind of hub for visitors for the nearby national Park and Koh Phi Phi Island. In this post we review a couple of accommodation options for families in Krabi.

Before arriving, we were a little worried that we might not like the hotel and the big crowds of tourists in the area. However, we were surprised by the peace and tranquility of Aonang Cliff Beach Resort. Although it is on the main road running down to the beach, it set into the cliff and is built over three four levels.

This is a place that draws you away from the hustle and bustle of the touristy area and into a wonderfully private world of relaxing pleasures.

Aonang Cliff Beach

The Highlights

There are a couple of pools for you to enjoy soaking in at the Aonang Cliff Beach Resort. On a warm, clear day there is nothing better than using the amazing infinity pool on the top floor of the hotel. It has brilliant views across to the islands of Hat Nopparat Thara National Park. Our room had the same view plus a bath on the balcony, which was such a relaxing treat to enjoy in the evening.

We would also definitely class the treatment received by the hotel staff as being among the highlights of our time here. In particular, the playful, welcoming way that they treated our daughters was great to see and really put the little ones at ease.

There is a free shuttle service to Andamana Beach Club that we would recommend taking advantage of. This bus takes you to a quiet, secluded beach where you will find no-one else but other hotel guests using this private beach. You can go swimming here and the kids can enjoy some time on the swings.

Food and Settling In

Choosing the all you can eat buffet down stairs next door to the hotel proved to be a good move on our first night. Taking a tired family out to try and find food shortly after arriving was sure to have ended badly. Instead, we were able settle in easily and would definitely recommend doing this when you arrive.

The next morning we discovered a terrific breakfast waiting for us. There was a big selection of continental dishes to choose from. We especially loved the Bircher Muesli and all the delicious fresh fruit.

Alisea Pool Villas

A great alternative to staying in a hotel is to look at the accommodation from Alisea Pool Villas. We loved having the privacy of our own lovely big pool, which was very well kept and clean.

The villa’s are only a 5 minute drive from Ao Nang. This turned out to be a great place for the girls to play and have fun. It was also big enough for the grown-ups in the group to tear themselves away from the fun for a while and quietly catch up with some work or reading.

Among the other things worth mentioning here is that they offer room service, which is terrific news when you can’t be bothered to cook after a tiring, action-packed day. We gave the Massaman curry and Tom Yum Kung soup a try and thoroughly enjoyed both of them, the girls enjoyed tucking into a pasta dish, a welcome break from the spicy food they had been sampling.

Again, you can take advantage of the free shuttle service that goes to the Andamana Beach Club for a quiet day out in a very attractive setting. The restaurant here makes delicious food, we ordered whole fresh fish with a spicy sweet and sour sauce, all washed down with delicious fresh coconut juice!

Breakfast is also included the stay, which is especially useful for freeing you from having to make it and then do the washing up. Overall, we loved the privacy that a Villa gives you but also the option of eating out or in. Eating out with kids can be tiring and they sometimes don’t like the local cuisine.

Both the accommodations we reviewed are perefect for families, the Aonang Cliff Beach Resort  is great if you wish to be in the centre of all the action as well as having easy access to the beach and the national park. Plus a big range of restaurants and amenities. Although Ao Nang is very busy with tourists, as soon as you enter the hotel the atmosphere is calm and relaxing.

Alisea Pool Villas on the other hand is great for families that want a little more privacy and are happy to spend their days in the pool. For us we preferred the privacy of the villa and we envisage returning with our extended family.

From both the hotel and the Villa’s a whole host of day trips can be arranged check out our recommended  list below.

  • Four Island tour –  For just a few hundred baht you can take a wooden long tail boat and head for the beautiful islands of Koh Poda, Koh Tub, Chicken Island and the bay of Railay
  • Koh Phi Phi Island – Including Maya bay one of the most beautiful bays in Thailand
  • Hong Island – with an unusual lagoon inside the island.
  • Ao Thalane Mangrove Kayaking – the best place to explore the mangroves  river.
  • Tha Pon Khlong Song Nam, or “Two Water Canal” – where salt water and fresh water meet, the result is crystalline water great for swimming.
