After crossing Iceland and the Faeroes Islands, we arrived in Africa on January 22. Immediately, we pointed towards Chefchaouen, the “Blue City”, and Morocco astonished us with its colours, but also with its welcoming people. It has been a very warm welcome indeed, even if the nights were freezing and sleeping in our tents the first time has been quite a shocking experience.

Roaming through the old town and its narrow and colourful alleys, the market, the local food, the warmhearted people, is the best way to get in touch with the Moroccan culture. Slowly, we deepened into this endless continent, and at the same time Africa deepened into us, and since the very first glance it stole our hearts and souls.

Chefchaouen has about 35,000 inhabitants and lies North-West of Morocco. It is located among the Rif Mountains, which stretch from Spartel Cape to the borders with Algeria. Founded by the Arabs in 1471 as a fortified city against the Portuguese army, it became the refuge of exiled Jews and Muslims. Spanish roquefort until 1956, today many people still speak Spanish and meanwhile the town has become a relevant tourist destination.
