Arbatax – Sardinia’s Most Beautiful Beaches for Travellers and Families

Sardinia, a magic land surrounded by blue waters and idillic beaches, offers one of the world’s most beautiful sea environment.

In the last years the ferry tickets got quite costly, but low cost airline companies still allow to reach the island from different European airports starting from 50 euros. Well, not on August unfortunately…

Where to go to the sea in Sardinia?

The Italian island offers many different spots to enjoy crystal clear waters and stunning beaches. Last August I was in Ogliastra: relax, the sea, and daily trips to discover this corner of Paradise where the blue sea is coupled with rocky cliffs and mountains.

Arbatax, a suburb in Tortolì, is the perfect starting point to explore the surrounding area or to rest on the long beach of Cala Moresca, whose name is due to the raids carried by Saracens (Morus in Sardinian dialect) in ancient times. Cala Moresca is among most charming beaches of Sardinia’s east coast: fully equipped to welcome any kind of visitor (car park, bar, beach umbrellas, paddle boats…), it can be easily reached from Tortoli and, although very popular, it is never overcrowded.

Cala Sisine is another beautiful spot, a small gem on the Orosei Gulf. It lies amid the spectacular Serra Ovra’s crags which point to the sea from over 500 metres. Cala Sisine is approachable by boat from Cala Gonone, Arbatax and Santa Maria Navarrese. It is flanked by two rocky cliffs which give to the place a peculiar mountainous feeling, also stressed by the forest on the gorge’s wall.

If you feel adventurous, you can also walk to Cala Sisine on an easy path through pine woods and cliffs overlooking the sea, but I wouldn’t suggest you such a trip during the hottest days.

And then we have the red rocks, truly an unmistakeable trademark of this part of Sardinia. Amid the colourful landscape painted by these rocks we find the Arbatax Park Resort, about 60 hectares stretching over the Bellavista Peninsula, on an unmatched spot over the sea.

The Arbatax Park is surrounded by a jagged coastline, and there also is a small bay where you can find quietness, peace and privacy. Moreover, it’s a fantastic place for snorkelling!

Arbatax, Sardinia, Italy

The perfect resort for families with children, it is also an excellent place if you don’t want to spend your whole time on the beach. There are tennis, football and squash fields, and archery grounds. The park area makes out most of the resort: olive trees, myrtles and junipers host a large population of mouflons, wild boars, deers, donkeys, sheep and cows.

Wellness lovers will also find the modern Thalasso & SPA centre, with several pools of salted water at different temperatures – and among them an outdoor pool with sea view – available also to children every day before 1 pm.

Useful information

Arbatax is about an hour drive from Cagliari and 2h 10m from Olbia. If you book your accommodation in the Arbatax Park Resort for more than one week, from/to airport transfer is included for free.

August in the Arbatax Park Resort is very crowded. The cheapest rooms are also the furthest from the beach and the smallest. Cottages and suites are the most comfortable options.
