Who doesn’t want to raise money for a charity that they support? In 2024, going into 2025, there are tonnes (literally tonnes!) of charity events taking place across the UK, making it a great time to see the country and to get some funds up at the same time! So, if you want to travel in the next year and want to raise money for charity, what are some of the most popular challenges you can take part in around the UK? Here are a few to look at!
Scotland
Starting with Scotland, what events do they hold each year to raise money for charity?
Edinburgh Marathon
The Edinburgh Marathon is one of the largest charity runs in the UK, attracting over 30,000 runners per year. It is a great place to raise money for charities like Macmillan or the British Heart Foundation without too much experience, as the course is mainly flat. There are also a lot of things to do in Edinburgh while you are there, from exploring its historic landmarks like Edinburgh Castle and the Royal Mile to immersing yourself in its vibrant arts scene, enjoying world-class festivals, and discovering the natural beauty of nearby landscapes.
Kiltwalk
It’s pretty much in the title! If you have a kilt and want to walk for charity, you can do so at the Kiltwalk, which usually takes place in Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen, and Dundee.
Wales
Snowdonia Charity Challenge
Something of a triathlon, this involves cycling, trekking, and canoeing around Snowdonia, allowing participants to see the stunning scenery, while also providing an interesting a demanding physical challenge.
Tenovus Cancer Care Goodnight Walk
One of the most emotive walks in Wales, and indeed, the UK, is the Tenovus Cancer Care Goodnight Walk. It raises money for cancer charities and support services. It takes place in the evening and is seen as a sombre bonding event for those who take part.
Northern Ireland
Belfast City Marathon
This marathon is one of the largest to take place in Ireland, and is not for the faint of heart! It involves a full marathon, a relay race, both a 5 and 10K run, and a fun run. It is light-hearted, and has activities for runners of all ages and abilities.
Lap The Lough
Do you have a bike? You can take part in Lap the Lough, which is an annual cycling event where you get to see around Lough Neagh. Cyclists of all levels are welcome, and you get to see the largest lake in the UK and Ireland at the same time!
England
The London Marathon
Everyone has heard of the London Marathon! Televised and world-famous, this race goes over Tower Bridge, past Buckingham Palace, and along the River Thames. It is a haul at 26 miles, but it is linked to all of the major UK charities.
