As the summer has finally arrived, many are rushing to find the ultimate holiday destination.
I don’t have to travel too far to find myself in an amazing place, though. In fact, I think I will stay well put in Italy this summer and enjoy one of the most amazing regions Italy has to offer. My plan is to finally travel to Sicily, the biggest island in the Mediterranean which is a quirky mixture of cultures and histories. I have been once already, but it was in the winter time and for too short a period. It is time I pay a proper visit.
Known for its beautiful beaches, its gorgeous cities and villages, and the many archeological sites such as Taormina and the Valley of the Temples, south of Agrigento, Sicily has everything to guarantee a perfect trip. One bonus factor to me is that Sicily is home to Mount Etna, one of the most active volcanoes in the world which I have been dreaming of hiking for a long time. I have promised myself I won’t go back home without having reached the top!
Finally, food in Sicily is fantastic, with some of the most famous Italian dishes coming from there – such as pasta alla Norma. Gelato in Sicily is meant to be heavenly: Sicily grows the famous Bronte pistachios, one of the best quality, so I can only imagine what a pistachio gelato may taste like. And what about the delicious cannoli – crispy pastry cones filled with a cream made of ricotta and other ingredients such as candied fruit or chocolate chips? My mouth waters at the thought.
As I want to make the most of my time in Sicily, I will bring my own car and the best way to travel is thus taking a ferry to Sicily which should be a guarantee for comfort and a very reasonable price. I can’t wait!
Are you also planning to go to Sicily this summer?

I’m a former human rights lawyer and academic. I abandoned my career to follow my true calling, which involved rafting down mighty rivers, zip lining across canyons and trekking to the craters of active volcanoes. Through my blog I share my stories, provide tips and occasionally go on a rant. My mission? Hiking up all volcanoes in the world!
