Arbatax – Beach and Relax on Sardinia’s Eastern Coast

Sardinia – Italy’s mediterranean gem – offers one of the most magnificent sea experience in the world. Although ferry tickets have quite rised in the last years, Sardinia is easily reached in about one hour flight from any major Italian town, and low cost companies make it also affordable. Public service is somehow scanty, but you can rent a car and still reach all the most beautiful corner of the island.

There are uncountable places worth to see. Last August I was in the Ogliastra area: relax, sea and treks all over the place to discover this paradise where the clear water shapes rocky landscapes and impervious mountains.

Arbatax – in the municipality of Tortolì – is an excellent starting point to explore the area or to refresh on the long beach of Cala Moresca – so-called because of the pirate raids of the Saracens (Morus in Sardinian language).

Today Cala Moresca is among the most charming beaches of the eastern coast. Well equipped – including a parking lot with bar and restaurant, and a beach umbrella and pedalo rental – and easily reached from Tortolì’s city centre, although very popular the beach is never too crowded.

Cala Sisine, a hidden gem in the Gulf of Orosei, is another beautiful spot: it lies among the spectacular cliffs of Serra Ovra, which dive into the sea from their 500-meter height. You can easily get there by sea thanks to daily trips starting from Cala Gonone, Arbatax and Santa Maria Navarrese. But to Cala Sisine you can also walk, through a simple path crossing pine groves and cliffs – but you do not suggest you to do so on a hot and sweltering summer day.

Useful information

Arriving there: The drive to Arbatax takes about 1h 40m from Cagliari and 2h10m from Olbia.

Accommodation: Arbatax Park Resort, 60 hectares on the Peninsula of Bellavista with a magnificent view on the sea; the park is limited by a jagged coast and a bay offering a quietness and a great spot for snorkelling; for over a week stays the transfer from/to the airport is free.
