The Independent Traveler’s Guide to Sharm el Sheikh, Egypt

If you prefer to travel in your own time, in your own way, you may avoid package holiday destinations like the plague. However, many of these hotspots deserve their fame, and there’s no need to let popularity get between you and the world’s best places.

Sharm el Sheikh in Egypt is one of these places

Here are a few low-maintenance (and low-cost) tips for enjoying this coastal town, which is located on the Sinai Peninsula and known for its spectacular diving, turquoise waters and desert-framed backdrop.

You may raise your nose at the idea, but you may actually save a lot of money by booking a package holiday to Sharm el Sheik then heading off the beaten track once you arrive.

Airfare and hotels are the biggest expenses for any traveller, and the money saved can be spent on incredible experiences like diving, becoming a certified diving trainer, or trekking through the desert.

Independent travellers seldom want to join a bus tour or pay for a package holiday, but they do love discovering unique destinations – just on their own time and in their own way. Most are open to a bit of planning and will even buy a guidebook for their journey, however; independent travellers are interested in a bit of serendipity and spontaneity. If that describes you, here are a few low-cost tips for enjoying the exotic coastal town of Sharm el Sheikh in Egypt, which is located on the Sinai Peninsula and known for its spectacular diving, turquoise waters and desert-framed backdrop.

If you are short on cash, research for cheap holidays during the ‘shoulder season’ or after August, when temperatures are lower and the crowds much sparer.

Trip Advisor has reviews and contact details of locally-owned Sharm el Sheikh hotels and bed and breakfast locations, some for as little as 10 or 20 pounds per night.

Staying in a locally-run B&B that has been well-reviewed is always a good way to save money and have a more ‘authentic’ experience; most hosts are eager to share tips on the best local places to eat, attractions tourist companies don’t tell you about, and other hidden gems that require local knowledge. This will help you avoid spending your time in over-priced Western-style restaurants and hotels, being herded along by people plying their trade on this popular tourist route, and will instead give you a cheap and memorable Sharm el Sheikh holiday.
