Loutro – A Greek Paradise Hidden in Crete

Fifty little houses and not more, lined up in a half circle around the small bay. All buildings are white with light blue windows, parted by the beach just for a few metres. The sea water is crystal clear. I relax on the ground and let the waves cover my feet.

I just arrived in Loutro, with an old and noisy ferry called Dascalogiannis, the only available mean to reach this quite little village. There aren’t many cars coming by, the night lights are down to minimal and complete stillness is only interrupted by a ferry carrying visitors of livestocks, or by the music coming from the only place open during the night: Sifis Hotel’s dehors, where me and my husband are lodged. It’s our first anniversary… what better place than Loutro in Crete to celebrate?

The small hotel’s owners are kind and welcoming. The room is very basic, but comfortable, and we don’t need any television, having such a breathtaking view over the sea from our private balcony. Four magnificent days or relaxing routine.

Every evening we had dinner in a different restaurant. There are five of them, all located over the sea. The menu is more or less the same everywhere: excellent seafood and typical greek dishes, and an unmissable yogurt and grape dessert!

The prices are affordable and the staff was always very kind and caring. The waiters are often those same guys you may meet at the harbour at dusk, salting the fish they just caught. And the cats hoping for some leftover from your plate, are the same felines lazing under the shadow during afternoons.

Everything works around tourism, but it’s a selected tourism, especially because of how hard is to reach Loutro. A flight may take you to Chania, and after a couple of buses you will reach Sfakia where you may get a ferry or a small boat to Loutro. And true challenge loving visitors may opt for an intense trekking route that arrives to Loutro by land.

Being there just a few accommodation opportunities, many visitors – especially British and Greek –  prefer to rent a small flat for the whole season. But also a long weekend in this lovely destination is an excellent choice for a relaxing and revitalising holiday!

Not a desperate, but a happy housewife, I cry every time before leaving for a new journey, and then cry again when it's time to get back. I heard I am a good cook, and I'm sure to be a good fork. I write my journals since I was in Middle School, and now they have become travel diaries on www.thegretaescape.com. I love sushi, my three cats and of course my husband, who shares with me every journey and every exciting experience!

  1. Loutra – this looks like an idyllic little place in Greece to chill! We’re thinking of a trip to Crete soon. If so, we’ll put Loutra on our radar…
